In what could be an honest mistake or a very clever strategy at Apple, the company has allegedly downgraded its SATA connection speeds to 1.5 Gbps using SATA 1 in the new line of Macbook Pros released at this WWDC. These Macbook Pro in discussion have traditionally a speed of 3 Gbps using the SATA 2 technology and this was an important criteria for people who went in for the costlier and high performance SSD.

While the reports have not yet been confirmed by Apple, this more than well explains how Apple manages the amazing 8 hours battery backup we earlier wrote about. While this downgrade will not even be noticed leave alone affect users of normal hard disk that comes with the Macbook Pro, those who paid the extra bucks for their SSD’s are confused and annoyed about the secret change.

It’s unknown if this current problem is an accident, or if Apple is intentionally shipping laptops with these storage speeds intentionally.  Some users on the Apple support forums think it’s an honest mistake, while others are suffering disbelief that Apple would intentionally cap the SATA drive speeds.

When we asked for the information on Apple’s Chat with their tech/sales support, and they simply told us “we’re not allowed to disclose that information.” What is more weird about this is that the 17″ and the white Macbook retains its speed of 3 Gbps. It is also not known if Apple can fix this with a simple Software Update or if it needs a whole lot of tinkering for which users would need to pay Apple.

If we get to know it , you will as well. If you get to know it first, drop in your comments. If you are a user of the new 13″ or the 15″ Macbook Pro , we would like to  hear more from you about this.
