Since (apparently) later versions of 10.5, Spotlight has a file called VolumeConfig.plist which you can edit to index only certain directories. For example, I wanted to index only my Mail folder and my Documents folder because those don’t usually have radical changes, and they’re the only places I ever need search (especially Mail).

To accomplish this, I first disabled Spotlight indexing on my hard disk:

sudo mdutil -i off /

Then, with root permissions, I opened /.Spotlight-V100/Store-V1/VolumeConfig.plist and edited it. I changed partialPath toUsers/myusername/Library/Mail (note the lack of a leading slash), and policySearch to 3.

You can also copy the whole block describing the index (it has a long UUID string for its key, and then the dictionary that goes with it describes partialPath andpolicySearch), and change the UUID (use uuidgen in Terminal) to add additional paths that you want indexed. When you’re done, save changes to the file, then restart mds:

sudo launchctl stop com.apple.metadata.mds

Now that you’ve set up the new indexes, you should be able to control them using mdutil:

mdutil -sv ~/Library/Mail

Use caution however, as you may undo your work if you run mdutil -i on /.

With Google OS and Android Phones launched CEO Eric Schmidt need to re-analyze his role in the Apple Board of Directors. He has served on Apple’s Board of Directors since 2006, and will discuss with Apple how his role on the board may change in the wake of increasing overlap between the two companies’ markets. The report comes just one day after Google announced that it will be entering the operating system market with Chrome OS, initially targeted at netbook computers.

Because Google’s new Chrome OS would compete with Apple’s own computer software, Schmidt said on Thursday he would talk to the Mac computer maker about whether he should recuse himself from Apple’s board.

“I’ll talk to the Apple people. At the moment, there’s no issue,” Schmidt told reporters at a Sun Valley media and technology conference organized by boutique investment bank Allen & Co.

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission last month reportedly began taking an interest in the two companies’ ties for potential antitrust reasons, as both Schmidt and Arthur Levinson, former CEO of biotech firm Genentech, are directors of both Apple and Google.

With Google’s release of its Android operating system for mobile phones, Schmidt has recused himself from discussions regarding the iPhone at Apple board meetings, and it now appears that the operating system overlap between the two companies may necessitate further restrictions on Schmidt’s participation with Apple, if not an outright resignation if potential solutions are deemed unworkable.

When I first heard about a musical video shot completely by the iPhone 3GS, I expected it similar to the crappy video made by for the Nokia N95 promotion. However the iPhone video for a song called Love, Love, Love by Reyna Perez is actually good!

Reyna Perez has embraced the concept of digital collaboration with her self-titled EP. She recorded each song in Brooklyn on acoustic guitar at a home studio and emailed the tracks to producer Michael Maurice (Curio Sound) in Denver. Over the course of 2 months, Maurice mastered her songs into full fledged productions using Logic software and his own instruments. “I’ve given them a warm analogue sound, without using any actual analogue equipment; it’s a testament to the times, and I’m very happy with the results,” says Maruice.

The final mixes arrived via ftp on Friday, June 17th, the same day the iphone 3GS hit the streets. Video producer Ari Kuschnir, Reyna’s fiancee, purchased the iPhone after a two hour wait, made shorter by listening to the tracks. Hearing the new music and playing with 3GS, he had an idea. Why not debut Reyna with the first iPhone music video? “It became clear that the phone’s camera quality was good enough to shoot a music video. It seemed fitting for the project.”

While most Mac users are well aware of the uses and benefits of a marvelous little program called Growl (In case you already did not , it is a notification software that very easily attaches itself to almost all the common Mac softwares), the good news is that the makers of Growl have extended the usability of their useful App to the iPhone as well. Now you can get your tweets while you are listening to that favorite song of yours.

Prowl is a Growl client for the iPhone. Notifications from your Mac can be sent to your iPhone over push, with a full range of customization and grace you expect.

Push notifications As soon as a Growl notification pops up on your Mac, Prowl will forward it to your iPhone or iPod Touch over the push notification service found in iPhone OS 3.0. Which notifications are pushed is configurable, allowing only the important messages to be delivered.

While the list of features is really not over the limit but frankly it is enough for everyday use.

Prowl also features a small but excellent selection of sounds which can be played when your push notifications arrive.

Yes it really is just that simple!

The possibilities really are endless: You can be pinged with a push notification when a torrent finishes downloading, you get a new IM or email, you’re mentioned on Twitter, or anything else Growl can notify you about.

The cost for all this $3 only. Yes that is a lot less for an App

Finally after a long dry spell Apple seems to have understood the importance of Camera and Video Recording in today’s world of multimedia. One of TechCrunch’s sources in Asia claims Apple has ordered a tremendous number of cameras — the kind that go into the iPhone — and that an order of this quantity can only mean one thing: iPods.

Putting a camera in the iPod touch, which uses the same operating system as the iPhone, is a logical next step for Apple. But the order size is supposedly so large that some people in Taiwan are speculating that Apple may be planning to put cameras in the lower end of the iPod line, too. “Everything but the Shuffle may have a camera in it soon,” says TechCrunch’s source.

In another news DigiTimes reports that Taiwanese firm Foxlink is currently developing micro projectors for use in mobile phones, with Apple being one of the companies expected to launch devices with built-in projectors later this year. The projectors would allow the iPhone and possibly the iPod touch to directly project video output onto an external surface.Foxlink has long been a supplier for the iPhone and iPod, providing the proprietary connectors used in many of Apple’s devices.

International brand vendors, including Nokia, Samsung Electronics and Apple, reportedly all plan to launch handsets with built-in micro projectors by the end of this year, indicated the sources, adding that Foxlink is likely to benefit from the emerging trend due to its strong business relationships with Nokia and Apple.

Electronics packaging has been growing steadily smaller and less annoying over recent times, but here comes Apple adding complexity where we didn’t know it was needed. The bright sparks at Cupertino envision powered, data-transmitting boxes that will ensure the device within is fully juiced, packing the latest firmware, and capable of pumping out video demos so that the packaging needn’t get in the way of wooing customers. Sure, up-to-date firmware and a full battery sound nice, but we can’t help but wonder about the price premium we’d have to swallow to be able to see our new toy dancing before we’ve even set it free from its box.

“For example, the ability to fully view or interact with the electronic media device while still inside the packaging is severely limited in most packaging designs,” Apple says. “In addition, typical packaging designs do not enable the electronic media device or devices housed within the packaging to present content (e.g., media content or advertising) while inside the packaging and without draining battery power. Other functionality, such as firmware or software upgrades, are also typically not available while the electronic media device is housed within the product packaging (e.g., at a retail location). This is primarily due to the inability to provide external power or data to the device while still housed within the packaging.”

To solve this problem, Apple proposes what it calls “active packaging,” or retail packaging that provides “power, data, or both power and data to one or more electronic media devices housed within the packaging. The power may be provided by a direct power connection to an external power supply or by one or more wireless power techniques. A data signal may be provided by one or more direct data lines to the electronic media device within the packaging, or the electronic media device may enable an integrated wireless network interface to receive a data stream while housed in the packaging.”

The first jailbreak application for the iPhone 3GS has been released by premier iPhone hacker George Hotz.

Named “purplera1n,” the unlocking software is Windows-only. Hotz says a jailbreak for Mac is “coming shortly.” Here is the file in case you cannot find it at the above site.” purplera1n“

Hotz’s application requires an iPhone 3GS running the 3.0 OS, and the latest version of iTunes — 8.2. Hotz warns that the unlock is beta and to back up the iPhone before running it.

Jailbreaking is not unlocking, a different, distinct process that frees the iPhone from the current carrier and makes it available for use with other wireless networks.

Hotz gained fame in 2007 when he became the first person to unlock the original iPhone. Using a combination of software and hardware hacks, the then 17-year-old tried to sell the hacked iPhone on eBay, but pulled the auction when jokers raised the bid price to more than $100 million.

He shortly traded the unlocked iPhone for three locked iPhones and a Nissan 350Z with Terry Daidone, founder of Certicell, a phone repair company in Louisville, KY.

How to Jailbreak

The process was amazingly simple. Using a Windows netbook – it doesn’t work under Windows 7 – I simply installed iTunes and ran purplera1n. It took a second to reboot then it rolled through recovery mode, rebooted, and an app called Freeze appeared. Freeze then installed Cydia and all was right with the world.

Here’s how to do it.

1. Find a Windows PC.
2. Install iTunes.
3. Download purplera1n.
4. Run purplera1n.
5. Wait.
6. Run Freeze.
7. Reboot.

Now you’re jailbroken. To run OpenSSH simply install the OpenSSH package in Cydia and ssh to your iPhone with root/alpine login/pass combination.

Apple has expanded the services offered by its retail stores to include fixing damaged iPhone screens.

The Loop has confirmed that if your iPhone has a broken screen and you take it to an Apple retail relocation, they have the capability to fix it on the spot. The machine (think big suction cup), which is located out of customer view in the back of the store, reportedly separates the iPhone from the screen, allowing a new one to be installed.

Of course, your screen doesn’t have to be completely smashed to need some sort of replacement done. Some users have reported dust particles on the inside of the screen as well.

All three models of the iPhone can have there screens replaced at a store under this program. Unfortunately, due to the way they are built, iPod touch screens cannot be replaced.

If your phone is under warranty and the screen needs to be replaced due a defect with the device, there is no cost to have the screen replaced at a retail store. However, if it’s not a warranty issue, the cost of having the screen replaced is $199.

The displays are the only warranty work being done in the retail stores these days. The stores also have to ability to fix or replace damaged audio components in the iPhone.

Of course, allowing its retail staff to fix minor issues in the store cuts down on the amount of time customers are potentially without their iPhones. That makes for some happy customers. This is one of the only in-house warranty repairs being done on iPhones. Not only that, but in the past, owners with broken screens either got a full phone replacement or nothing at all. Of course, if you’re outside of your warranty and don’t have AppleCare, then you’ll probably still find yourself out of luck. Still, knowing all the people we know who have shattered their screens, this is certainly welcome news for clumsy and not-so-clumsy iPhone owners alike.

If you decide you’d like to tackle the problem yourself, you can always follow Jeff Carlson’s DIY guide over at TidBITS.
